BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES
Duncan began teaching in the department of Theology and Religious Studies in 1967. On October 11, 1992, Duncan was ordained as a permanent deacon by the late Cardinal Basil Hume in the chapel of Saint Mary’s University College. Since retiring from full time teaching, Duncan has been a Visiting Senior Research Fellow t Lampeter College and at Saint Mary’s University.
In addition to preaching and assisting the chaplain at Saint Mary’s, Duncan’s academic and pastoral work as a tutor, his role as a union official and his ecumenical and inter-faith apostolate, all became part of his diaconal ministry. He also found that he was welcomed as a visiting preacher in a number of churches, both locally and further afield. Now, having passed the age of Seventy five, Duncan is nonetheless able to continue in his ministry, particularly in preaching.
After thirty-three years of lecturing at Saint Mary’s, Duncan retired in 2000 to study for the Doctor of Ministry in Preaching at the Aquinas Institute of Theology at Saint Louis Missouri.  Having obtained the degree in 2003, he has used every opportunity to pass on the knowledge and skills acquired at Aquinas.
These opportunities have included published material, workshops and lectures on preaching. He has contributed a number of articles and homiletic reflections in books and religious journals. He is a tutor with the ecumenical College of Preachers (UK). He taught an MA module on “Proclamation and Preaching” at Saint Mary’s and has offered weekend courses and homily preparation workshops under various auspices. He is member of the US based Catholic Association of Teachers of Homiletics and of the Academy of Homiletics. He is also a committee member of the UK based Catholic Association of Preachers
Duncan is a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre. He has led numerous pilgrimages and study tours to the Holy Land and is active in charities supporting Palestinian Christians and Palestinian higher education. His publications include, “Pilgrim Preacher, a study of the impact of Holy Land Studies on Preaching”, and “The Splendour of the Preachers: New Approaches to Liturgical Preaching”. He is the literary executor of his former colleague and friend, the late Professor Michael Prior, CM and has published two memorial volume of Michael’s selected essays and addresses.
Duncan met his late wife Ann in 1960 when they were both Theology undergraduates. They married in 1964 after both entering into full communion with the Catholic Church. Ann gave Duncan considerable support in his diaconal ministry, not least as candid critic of his preaching! They had four children, twelve grandchildren and one great-grandson.
